Back in July 2024, the first reports surfaced about a potential new remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved being in the works. This remaster, similar to Gears of War: Reloaded, would also apparently target a PS5 launch, making Halo’s official jump to Sony’s platform. However, a new rumour suggests that the remaster is actually closer to a full ground-up remake, featuring sprinting and updated, modern gameplay mechanics.
The report originates from Infinite_leaks who, as far as we can tell, has an okay track record so take all of the following information with a grain of salt. The leaker claims that the Halo: Combat Evolved remaster is actually a full remake, complete with updated gameplay and sprinting. The original game (or its sequels) didn’t feature a sprint button – something that was only added into the series with 2010’s Halo: Reach.
The leaker goes on to state that the gameplay for the Combat Evolved remake will be similar to a new Halo multiplayer game, likely the multiplayer that will accompany the launch of the next major Halo game. The remake is described as a full ground-up effort along the lines of Capcom’s Resident Evil remakes.
Halo: Combat Evolved already received a remaster in 2011 with the Anniversary edition, which updated the game’s visuals and tweaked some elements but mostly kept the core gameplay intact. However, the remake apparently aims to overhaul the original’s gameplay mechanics, adding more modern features and touch-ups. Most of all, this re-release will target the PlayStation audience as it remains one of the few major Xbox IPs that have yet to make the leap to multiplatform (outside of PC, of course).
Microsoft and Halo Studios have yet to make an official announcement so until then, we’ll have to wait and see if these rumours pan out to be true. Perhaps we’ll hear about it at an upcoming Halo event which plans to unveil the future of the Halo series.
