God of War Studio’s Next Game Isn’t Sci-Fi or a New IP – Report
God of War developer Santa Monica Studio is currently working on a new project, though the details are being kept tightly under wraps. For years, fans suspected that 2018’s God of War director Cory Barlog had secretly been working on a new IP that could involve space or some sci-fi elements based on updated profile pictures to his social media in the past. However, reporter Jason Schreier claims that Santa Monica Studio’s next project isn’t a sci-fi game or a new IP.
Earlier this week, Schreier mentioned on ResetEra that Santa Monica Studio’s next game wouldn’t be a new IP, leading many to speculate that the sci-fi project Barlog had seemingly “teased” before was related to another popular, exisiting sci-fi IP like Star Wars. However, Schreier has now quickly shot down those rumours too, claiming that the studio’s next game won’t a sci-fi project either.
Schreier mentioned on a recent ResetEra comment:
“I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one. Maybe that’s why people are confused. Please don’t ask me more questions about this – if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future it’ll be in an article, not on a forum. I can also confirm that Ashhong knows what they are talking about. And that the sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense.”
As for what the secret project could be, the obvious choice would be more God of War. After all, it’s one of Sony’s biggest franchises and there’s probably still plenty of storytelling potential after the ending of God of War Ragnarok, even if it may not feature Kratos as the protagonist anymore.
If the game were to be “God of War” by name but possibly feature Atreus as the new main character, this would line up with Schreier’s comments about it not being a new IP but “it might feel like one.” This could also indicate another gameplay style change as the ongoing story branches off into new territory, just like how the gameplay evolved from the Greek saga to the Norse saga. To add a little more fuel to the fire, Santa Monica Studio began hiring back in April 2024 for what could be the next God of War game based on job descriptions.
Of course, this is all speculation so take it with a pinch of salt.
