DC’s The Flash movie is still happening, even though it’s been sitting in development hell for a couple of years. It’s long been rumoured, as well, that the movie would be an adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline. After going through a slew of directors and writers, It director Andy Muschietti has the reigns of the movie in his hands and has confirmed that the movie will be adapting Flashpoint, but will be making changes to the fan-favourite story.

The Flashpoint comic revolved around the drastic changes that happened to the DC Universe when Barry Allen, not having learnt his lesson yet, mucked around with time again. Flashpoint is regarded as one of the best Flash stories in recent years, and detailed a devastating butterfly effect by removing one person’s influence from the world.
While I’m glad that the movie is still going ahead, with a 1st July, 2022 release date, using Flashpoint as the storyline for his first solo outing hardly seems like a good idea, one that DC and WB doesn’t quite seem to have learned its lesson on when producing their movies. It is one of the Flash’s biggest storylines, whatever changes they may be making regardless, and not an ideal introduction to the character or his complicated history.

However, using Flashpoint may just be the smoking gun WB and DC are using to both reboot and recast their extended movie universe with. It’s easy to tie this into the time travel dream that Bruce has in Batman v Superman where The Flash delivers a cryptic warning to him, but it’s also the easy way to get Robert Pattinson's The Batman into this universe along with a new Superman since we know that Ben Affleck is no longer the owner of the Bat-cowl and Henry Cavill’s place as Superman is still in limbo.
While we’re waiting to see just what exactly is happening in the DCEU, you can check out the excellent Flashpoint graphic novel and the equally fantastic 2013 animated adaptation, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.
