Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Releases to Frighteningly Poor Reviews
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the sequel to 2023’s video game adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s indie horror franchise phenomenon, has released today to very poor reviews from critics. The anticipated sequel directly follows the events of the first movie and sees the return of actors Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail and Matthew Lillard with newcomers McKenna Grace, Megan Fox and Skeet Ulrich.
As of writing, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 currently has an alarmingly low 11% Tomatometer rating on RottenTomatoes, which weighs the approval rating of positive to negative reviews. This is much lower than the 2023 movie’s 33% approval rating which is still quite low but it’s balanced by an 86% audience rating consisting of many fans who liked the movie’s direction and deeper dive into the indie games’ lore. Audience ratings for the sequel will roll in this weekend.
Critics are calling Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 a far inferior sequel to the first movie. Doug Walker from " class="general_link" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" >Channel Awesome called it “The Mortal Kombat Annihilation of Blumhouse sequels”, while Tyler Taing from Discussing Film gave it 2/5 and stated: “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is one of Blumhouse’s worst sequels, nothing more than a cynical cash grab that treats its audience and fanbase like mindless children.”
Most critics seem to praise the movie’s fantastic practical animatronics but most of that praise is buried under criticisms aimed at its thin writing which feels more like a bunch of references and Easter eggs for fans of the games rather than a compelling movie that can stand on its own. In other words, it’s very similar to its predecessor which was also criticised for similar problems. That’s either another win or loss depending on your enjoyment of the first movie.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is now showing in cinemas worldwide.
