As a recent Last Week Tonight episode so eloquently put it, while pointing out some very poignant troubles within the space in general, Wrestling is better than those other things you like. As a long time and dedicated fan, I took this Monday off to watch through Wrestlemania live (the main event finished at 7am local time), so let me enlighten you all to the virtues of professional wrestling!
Firstly, forget what you remember about wrestling in days gone by. Okay, now remember just enough to get the basics of match layout, athleticism, and wells of natural charisma that would put any young adult fiction love interest to shame back in your head. Modern wrestling is no longer the sole domain of the muscle bound brute power slamming your favourite rock throwing princess kidnapping giant, though those do have their place. Instead, it is a place for every shape, sex, ethnicity, alignment and more.
With a burgeoning independent scene, more and more talent and their amazing skills and gimmicks are coming to the attention of fans the world around. Whether it be the technical skills and 'catch as you can' style of the British scene, or the over the top antics of the American indie scene, to the puroresu and strong style dominant in Japanese wrestling promotions. If you can imagine it being performed in the squared circle, someone out there is giving it a go.
At the moment, the rise of the workhorse wrestler has led to skilled competitors putting on shows of mind boggling athletic prowess, with the high flying antics of previous smaller men no longer being kept in their wheelhouse only. More than ever, wrestlers of all sorts are going out of their way to show off what the human body is capable of and it is amazing to take in if you're willing to watch.
But wrestling wouldn’t be enough without some over the top stories running throughout. Most of us have memories (fond and not so fond) of watching Raw on Sundays to see what dastardly thing Triple H (or Edge on Wednesday’s if your were a SmackDown fan) was getting up to, and what their brave opponents were getting up to in response. Well good news, modern day wrestling has an even greater assortment of tales waiting for you to consume.
Stories like that of the Golden Lovers, Becky Lynch’s smashing of the glass ceiling above women’s wrestling to main event Wrestlemania, or the saga of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa show what can be extracted when you give the time and emotional heft to your wrestling. These stories brought out so much emotion in the fan base, and if you don’t shed a tear after consuming one of those stories, I don’t know if you’re human…
And if you’re just looking to be entertained, well then let wrestling sports entertain you in ways that only it can. With characters as over the top as the reimagined broken Matt Hardy, as charismatic and assured as The Velveteen Dream, flamboyant as Dalton Castle and his boys, or just plain sexually charged as Joey Ryan, you will be sports entertained (ed - Not just entertained... sports entertained!).
But what is truly remarkable at the moment is that wrestling has never before been as representative of every walk of life. From the importance and raising of the profile of women’s wrestling, wrestlers being portrayed in every light regardless of religion they follow or sexual preferences and being accepted by the audience as a whole (there will always be haters, but we can leave those in the darker corners of the internet...), there is a wrestler out there for you to identify with. And as a gamer there are more than a few whose gaming passion speaks volumes, with gaming channels and blogs from many being common.
And then let’s not forget the community of fans around wrestling either. With an active sub reddit which sees more and more AMAs and interaction from companies and wrestlers as time goes by, any number of blogs, YouTube channels and sites with write ups following all the details the community, has many tendrils to latch onto for those interested in everything wrestling.
All in all, I would wholeheartedly suggest you give professional wrestling a watch. It may not be your thing at first, but it certainly has something waiting for you if you’ll give it the chance it deserves. Cause it really is, better than those other things you like (those other things are just fine too though).
