Fallout Co-Creator Tim Cain Returns to Obsidian to Work on Mystery Project

Fallout co-creator Tim Cain has returned to Obsidian Entertainment “as a full-time employee and in-person” to work on a mystery project. Cain says the unannounced game that he’s currently working on won’t be something fans will easily guess.

Tim Cain was the lead programmer and producer behind 1997’s Fallout and its sequel before joining Obsidian in 2011 to work on Pillars of Eternity and South Park: The Stick of Truth. Cain also co-directed The Outer Worlds alongside Leonard Boyarsky (who also co-created the Fallout franchise) before leaving the company in 2020 where he worked on a remote contracted basis. The Fallout creator has now returned to Obsidian, as mentioned in a recent YouTube video uploaded by Cain, as a full-time employee.

Cain stated:

“I’m back at Obsidian. I’m there as a full-time employee and in-person, so not remote, and I’m not a contractor anymore. This means that I’m not working at other places, although there’s at least one game that I worked on [elsewhere] that I know is going to ship. I can’t talk about the project that I’m working on at Obsidian, just because that’s covered by NDA. Don’t bother guessing, you’re not going to guess right. I would probably say that I’m a lot less retired now.”

Regarding the mystery project, the obvious conclusion to jump to would be a new Fallout game, though Cain makes it clear that we wouldn’t be able to guess what it is. This sort of rules out a new Fallout title. Others suspect it could be linked to The Outer Worlds – a new IP that Cain and Boyarsky were quite passionate about when it launched back in 2019. Obsidian stated last month that it would rather work on new IP than tackle highly demanded sequels like Fallout: New Vegas, so Cain could potentially be making a new IP under Obsidian and Xbox.
