Elden Ring is making headlines this week after developer From Software finally unveiled the first gameplay trailer for the game’s highly anticipated upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, which is scheduled to release on 21 June. However, the studio hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a sequel entirely, though it currently doesn’t have any plans for more DLC or a follow-up at the moment.
Speaking to IGN in a recent interview, From Software president and director Hidetaka Miyazaki talked a bit about potential Elden Ring follow-ups and more DLC after Shadow of the Erdtree. “We don’t have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don’t want to snuff out that possibility,” said Miyazaki. “We think that there could well be something in the future.”
Speaking more on the matter, Miyazaki added:
“We don’t want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now. I think we said a similar thing at the end of Dark Souls 3. We didn’t want to flatten those possibilities or put a pin in them just at that time. And it’s a similar story with Elden Ring. We don’t want to discourage the possibilities for that. There might be more ideas in the future.”
Historically, From Software has never produced sequels or follow-ups to games, though Dark Souls was the only exception. The studio often chooses to develop new IP, though given the critical and commercial success of Elden Ring, there’s a good possibility that a sequel might be considered in the future.
From Software began recruiting devs for multiple new projects back in October 2023. Apart from the Elden Ring expansion, it’s unknown what the company might be working on next. One thing’s for certain, we can rule out Bloodborne. Miyazaki recently stated that he’s heard the demand for a remake, though it’s not up to him to move ahead with it as the IP belongs to Sony.
