Hype seems to be the ultimate killer in gaming these days. Recently, we witnessed this first-hand with the long-awaited release of CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, a game so absurdly hyped, that it was virtually impossible the final product could ever live up to what players had already envisioned in their minds. Sure, it was coming from a studio that proved their grit with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (a game praised as one of the best role-playing games of all time now), but with that luggage comes a dangerous path that developers must walk. We've felt those repercussions first-hand now, but it's a conversation that must be had before From Software delivers Elden Ring, which very well could suffer a similar fate.
As most already know, Elden Ring is a collaborative open world action-RPG from the minds of Hidetaka Miyazaki, the man behind Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and George R.R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice & Fire (that birthed the Game of Thrones craze). The game was first announced at E3 2019, and has since gone radio silent in terms of new gameplay or trailers, with new info barely trickling out here and there. For the most part, we know absolutely nothing about the game other than what has officially been released by From Software, but seeing the state of the hype and speculation now, you'd be mistakenly lead to believe it's the true saviour of gaming - the game that will end poverty, bring about world peace, and usher in a new age of gaming enlightenment.
...Elden Ring's current sky-high expectations are a byproduct of the studio's impressive pedigree.
Yet, gaming hype keeps finding itself in increasingly difficult spots. Elden Ring is not the first, Cyberpunk 2077 wasn't the first, and they won't be the last either.
