Hollywood’s cinematic universe obsession hasn’t slowed down as it now plans on introducing one for the upcoming live-action Borderlands movie. The news comes from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford who wants the movie adaptations to exist alongside the video game franchise as their own universes. Naturally, the Borderlands movie has to be a hit first before discussions about follow-ups, sequels and spin-offs can continue.
Speaking to IGN in a recent interview, Pitchford expressed his idea for a Borderlands cinematic universe that will presumably include sequels and character spin-offs, among many other ways it could flesh out an interconnected universe. Pitchford added that he doesn’t see the upcoming movie as Borderlands 1 but rather the starting point of this planned cinematic universe.
“One of the cool things about the movie is we’ve created a cinematic universe that lives side by side with the video game universe. And of course, the characters are there and authentic in the themes and even some of the storylines. But they’re independent storylines. So this isn’t Borderlands 1. This isn’t Borderlands 2. The Borderlands movie is the first of the Borderlands Cinematic Universe.”
