The DCEU is at something of a crossroads, the films have been financial successes mainly, but critics and the general public do not love the films. The recent less than stellar performance of Justice League has led to rumours of Flashpoint being seen as a reboot while Batfleck looks likely to fly off into the sunset with Jake Gyllenhall reportedly set to take over the role. There are other rumours going around such as Warner abandoning the shared universe concept as there are whispers of multiple films in development such as a Joker origin film (not starring Jared Leto) and take place in a different continuity. Even the Matt Reeves Batman film will be separate from the DCEU continuity despite possibly still starring Affleck. All in all while DC are winning the comics battle over Marvel, they are losing the film one due to this incoherent mess.
Now add another master of incoherent messes to the mix with Michael Bay. As reported by The Wrap, Bay has met with WB and DC executives to discuss taking over the Main Man’s film. He even handed them some script notes that screen writer Jason Fuchs is busy incorporating into the script. If, and it is a big if, Bay likes the new draft he may sign on to direct. I imagine that his script notes read something like, “not enough explosions here, too much dialogue here, why no vaguely racist caricature in this scene and this scene is ok but needs more Megan Fox in a tight shirt”.
If handled correctly, Bay could actually be the right director – as a man who is so over the top as to be a caricature himself - since Lobo started as a satirical take on the grim and gritty anti-hero popularised in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. He was supposed to be the DC character that shone a light on the Punisher, Wolverine and whatever the DC analogues were as super hero comics became more violent and angsty. Comic fans did not see beyond the surface and took to Lobo’s brand of ultra-violence and smutty jokes and he soon became extremely popular.
DC are also looking to create their answer to Deadpool and Lobo, sans fourth wall breaking, is the closest character they have. Both are violent, prone to one liners and dirty jokes. I would really prefer DC to bring something new to the table rather than look over at the competition and try and emulate their formula, maybe Bay is that something new, but I just have to look at Transformers 2 through 5 to have serious doubts.
