Battletech took everything that made tabletop wargaming an obsession of players interested in tactical battles and miniature gaming and boosted it with the absurdity of giant bipedal tanks battling across the galaxy in 1984. FASA created a whole new genre for dice and ruler obsessives to lose their time and incomes on. The property languished almost forgotten for many years after the release of the Mechassault game on Nintendo DS in 2006.
That is all changing this year as Harebrained Schemes has finally brought back the venerable series with the release of Battletech, a game has likely been made possible by the success of the X-Com series which showed that gamers are ready to rediscover the joys of the slower pace of turn based battles.
The game throws you into the thick of the warring factions of the Inner Sphere where you must take control of a mercenary company, struggling to survive on the poor takings made from official Mercenary Board contracts. Your company is deep in debt to the various banks as you try and keep your mechs and your ship, The Leopard, running so that you can jump from system to system to earn enough credits to keep your creditors at bay for just another day.
Grumpy Old Man who still collects toys (THEY. ARE. NOT. DOLLS), PC Gamer lured to the Dark Side of console gaming, comic book reader and fan of all things pop culture.
