DC Studios is pairing up a couple of Batman villains, Bane and Deathstroke, for their own movie. Both villains have appeared in past DC movies – Bane appeared in both 1997’s Batman & Robin as well as 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, while Deathstroke briefly appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Warner Bros. and DC now want to bring these villains together in a new movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and DC are working on a Bane and Deathstroke movie. Matthew Orton, the writer behind Marvel’s Moon Knight series as well as the South African crime series Devil’s Peak, has signed on to write the untitled movie. Beyond that, no other creative roles have been announced and it’s unclear who will play the roles of both Batman villains.
Tom Hardy previously portrayed Bane in Christopher Nolan’s comic book epic, The Dark Knight Rises – a big step up over the bumbling Bane seen in Batman & Robin. His portrayal of the menacing brute was praised by critics at the time, though DC hasn’t included the villain in other Batman-related projects other than a parody of his character in the animated Lego Batman movie.
Deathstroke, meanwhile, was portrayed by Joe Manganiello, who appeared in very brief cameos in the Justice League movies. Manganiello is currently in South Africa starring as the villain Crocodile in Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. According to reports, if Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie had moved forward, Manganiello’s Deathstroke would’ve been the antagonist. The Caped Crusader received another reboot under Matt Reeves, though featuring a new cast and universe with Robert Pattinson in the leading role.
Back in May, director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared the first look at David Corenswet as Superman in his upcoming reboot movie. It’s not yet known if Batman will be recast in the newly revamped DC cinematic universe since Pattinson’s The Batman takes place in its own isolated universe.
