Attack on Titan Final Season Director Comments on the Ending
Attack on Titan's final season is about to air later this week, and there's plenty of excitement and anticipation leading into its grand finale. The anime series, adapted from Hajime Isayama's best-selling manga of the same name, first began in 2013 and has since received three acclaimed seasons. The fourth and final season will likely conclude Isayama's manga, though the source material has yet to reach its finale. However, the final season's director recently made some comments about the ending of the show, and how it might pair up with the manga's epic conclusion.

Wit Studio were previously responsible for creating the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, but now MAPPA has taken over the reigns for the fourth and final season. New MAPPA director Yuichiro Hayashi made some comments about Attack on Titan's finale during a recent showcase of the studio's upcoming projects. Apparently, Hayashi already has a clear vision on how to end the anime. "With the start of the final season just around the corner, we were surprised by the overwhelming response to the [trailer] released in May," said Hayashi. It seems that we have taken on a big project, but there is no turning back now, so this year we have been working on it with the new team and recreating it through animation."
Hayashi further elaborated on the ending, "Nobody knows how the manga will end, but we will be able to reach the climax of this great story. It may be the 'end,' but we still have a long way to go. So I hope we can enjoy it to the end."
Many fans have taken this as meaning that the anime will have a separate conclusion to the manga - something that is still a bit contentious in the anime community. However, it also sounds like Hayashi might imply that the final season will continue for longer than expected. As was the case with season 3, it's possible that the final season will be split into two cours (12-13 episodes each per seasonal showing), to allow Isayama time to conclude the manga so that they can adapt it faithfully in the manga. Other speculation has led to Isayama already telling MAPPA how the manga ends, thus allowing them to already plan out and animate the story to its entirety correctly. Only time will tell.
Attack on Titan's final season airs on December 7th, 2020.
