Back in December 2022, Amazon greenlit a live-action God of War TV series, which previously had executive producers Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus attached to the project. However, it was rebooted back in October 2024 with Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D. Moore now leading the charge. It seems like the show is moving forward at the company as it recently ordered two seasons for the TV show.
God of War showrunner and writer Ronald D. Moore recently appeared on actress Katee Sackhoff’s podcast to confirm that Amazon has already ordered two seasons for the TV series. “Right now I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they asked me to come in, I’m literally in the writers room and that’s my new thing,” he said.
Moore later revealed that he’s looking forward to playing the God of War games after having not played video games since the arcade days in the 1980s. Moore even jokes about not knowing where the R1 button was, adding that he repeatedly dies due to hesitation. If the TV series aims to adapt the Norse saga of the games, luckily it’s a lot more story-driven with plenty of accessibility options to adjust the game’s difficulty, whereas the older hack-and-slash Greek saga games could be considered quite challenging to a casual player.
On that note, it’s not clear if Amazon’s TV series will adapt the Greek or Norse saga of Kratos’ life. The more likely option is the Norse saga, since it’s a lot more story and character-heavy than the Greek-set games and it’s the popular storyline most modern players are familiar with. If Amazon is following HBO’s The Last of Us format, then we can assume two seasons means it aims to adapt both Norse games, 2018’s God of War and 2022’s God of War Ragnarok, per season. We’ll probably know more details closer to its release.
