A Minecraft Movie 2 Confirmed With July 2027 Release Date
After the enormous success of A Minecraft Movie this year, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary have announced the sequel, A Minecraft Movie 2, confirmed with a release date of 23 July 2027. The sequel is set to hit theatres a couple of months after Sony and Nintendo’s live-action Legend of Zelda movie.
As revealed on the official X account for A Minecraft Movie, the sequel is moving forward at Warner Bros. and Legendary, set to arrive in July 2027. Beyond that, we don’t have much information to go on, but there’s a good chance that Jack Black will reprise his role as Steve. Given the first movie’s ending, we can also expect the studios to start looking for an actress to play Alex. It’s unclear if the cast from the first movie will also make a return, including Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers.
Original director Jared Hess (who also directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre) will return to direct and co-write A Minecraft Movie 2.
A Minecraft Movie released earlier this year and despite mixed reviews, it ended up making nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office – officially making it one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and the second highest-grossing video game movie of all time behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Nintendo aims to capitalise on the success of its video game adaptation too after it recently announced its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The description for A Minecraft Movie reads:
“Four misfits are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a quest with an unexpected expert crafter.”
A Minecraft Movie is currently available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray. Unfortunately you can't stream it in South Africa yet.
