So... Character creation in games.
Do you want to select from 5-6 premade characters, or do you want to spend 1-2 hours getting your puppet juuuuust right?

@Teb - Pick the least ugly looking premade character, remove hair, add beard and glasses, set skin tone to pasty-white and ready to go in 5 minutes.

I want to get into the game as quickly as possible, so most attractive pre-made character. What I;m wearing doesn't matter as, generally in RPG's, my character looks like the bargain basement walmart shopper when loot starts to drop. Bunny slippers of comfort + chainmail of hospital gown.

Anybody else have a "must buy" item? Like, you have 20 computer mice, but whenever you see one you go "mmmmmm... I need this"

Mine seems to be headphones. No idea why, I don't really listen to music and I hardly game with headphones on these days, but every time I see headphones I just have to check the price and make calculations...

Yeah I have a headphone fetish too, but my tendency to be a minimalist means I don't buy, I just try. If they break (or in the case of my last set, get stolen) then I replace.

I used to have a collection though So I can understand

Hey dudes, anyone know of any good resources for teaching yourself coding in Python? Keen to learn, in conjunction with a data science course I'm doing (it has some Python for business in it, but would like to expand on it)

Thanks in advance

@Snow - only ever tinkered with Python script for some modelling a few years back but never wrote anything from scratch.

My first suggestion would be Coursera (www.coursera.org) - did a few modules on Matlab to get familiar with the package. You can do the learning modules for free and obviously pay to submit for examinations if you want accreditation.

I've not checked them myself but you could also look at a series of free Python tutorials Microsoft released a few months back (https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/opensource/2019/09/19/new-python-training-video-series-beginners/)

Just sitting here thinking how amazing it is that I can check my bank balance at any time. Back when I was... 21? Cellphone banking became a thing and you had to send messages to the bank for a balance. Before that... you had to go to an ATM and check. You simply had no clue if you didn't check up on in. Mind blowing

What other tech (20 years old or less) do we take for granted?
Music on demand is one (Back in Kimberley there was about 3 radio stations)
More media being released a year than my whole lifetime
Being able to fact-check stuff in 5 minutes (if only more people would actually do that )

The UK banking system still works that way, pathetic how far behind they are compared to SA banks.

@DP the UK still works off cheques o_O

@Teb email - allowing us to communicate instantaneously with friends, family and business contacts, although the latter is more a curse.
Cell phones - Ubiquitous mostly reliable communication anywhere and anywhen. Again a curse and a blessing.
Related to music on demand - Streamining for TV and film. In the olden days we would be months if not years behind the countries of origin for most of this entertainment. Now we are able to get that (legally) within 24 hours of it airing overseas!

The UK is really that "backward"? are we talking London here or some forgotten corner of the realm?
Never heard of this angle, is there any reason they are so behind (Besides the queen not liking this new "witchcraft")

Maybe not taken for granted, but the sheer amount of distance most of us cover daily and yearly.
The fact that paper money is fast becoming a hassle. I used to HATE ending up with R90 in small change after a day's shopping

All over bud. Friends in the UK still have to go their council offices to pay their monthly rates and taxes in person and yeah they still use cheques. I think it is better than the last time I visited but because the postal system is secure they still prefer cheques to EFTs.

LOL when SA is in front for a change with something!

Yea, paper money is a thing of the past. You don't even see your pay anymore. It gets transferred to your account, then you transfer it out & use your card for the rest.
Also nice not having to handle real money anymore, never know wheres its been

Every tried a "paper" straw with Switch energy drinks...it makes a huge fuzzy mess once the straw hits the drink...

This is about the only thing I am against, that they had to ban. ...I got a pack of a 1 000 plastic straws in my car...

The opposite is actually true for the majority of low-income people in the country. More and more people is closing bank accounts, and there is various reasons for this, from not trusting banks to banks that do not want to open bank accounts as the peoples income is to low to open an account.

These people prefer to be paid in cash with they keep in the “mattress” bank.

@KF SA banking has always been at the forefront of technological advancement. ATMs were first deployed here, SASWITCH allowing you to use any bank's ATM was first rolled out here, interbank exchanges allowing for faster reflection of transfers was done either first or second in SA. SA has always had a first-world banking system.

Same... I can honestly say I have never written out a cheque in my life. I was either to poor or to tech savvy

Ten years from now we will all be on here going "Hey remember when cars ran on PETROL?" Now it just runs directly of your bank account

I remember trying to setup a debit order on my account to go off on the 10th of every month to pay rent to the landlord as per my contract, I had to eventually pay him 3 days later because the banks were unable to do it. Apart from calling them 3 times because the process was so complicated I eventually had to settle for the 13th of every month. The 10th at the time was a holiday which then rolled over to the weekend and then they couldn't do Monday because that was a bank holiday, It was such a mess.

Also if you are paying for something online they sometimes take double the money in case it bounces, never figured it out it was always random, spending 1000 euro on a plane ticket but they take 2000 euro and give you back the 1000 euro a few days later. No idea what they do if you don't have double the money. I always carried cash just to not have to use the system, in fact a lot of my card purchases were done on my FNB card

Morning people. Anybody know what Port Elizabeth is like at the moment?
There seems to be lot of job openings there, which either means people are leaving, or it means companies have moved there.

PE is cheap AF, seriously those small Eastern Cape cities have very low costs of living. I've heard, anecdotally, of some companies especially manufacturing, moving there to supplement the traditional motor vehicle factories but other than that I'm not 100% sure. Maybe send a mail to your Econ department they would have up to date stats and data?

This is something I also heard "in the grapevine"
The place emptied out because of reasons, now there is a land grab and a lot of open positions.
Was wondering if anyone has first/second hand experience with the quality of life and crime (hahaha still South Africa)

I've been trying to remember a game... Used to play it in the arcade a flippen lifetime ago, probably 25 years or so.
It had the view of Golden axe, you play as a tiny dude that rides a giant and you punch stuff to death? Two people could play. Was very bloody.
If you run out of lives it shows you in a dragons mouth that's slowly closing unless you add more coins? Any ideas?

Asking around to see if anyone can recommend a third-party repair place, in or around Joburg, for out-of-warranty console repairs?

Got a mate with a base Xbox One with front panel buttons that have stopped working (hopefully a simple wiring fix as everything else seems fine). However, attempting to go through MS's official channels and Xbox ambassador chat has just led to dead ends - probably due to their being no locally-endorsed service center anymore for out-of-warranty repairs.

A Google search brings up plenty of options, of course, but wanted to see if anyone has any opinions or has used a third-party repair place themselves recently.

Does anyone know how I can connect an XBOX 360 to a PC monitor? I got my son a new Xbox and took the old one...

I have been told to get a – Active HDMI to VGA cable with HDMI / VGA convertor and a sound jack to connect to an external speakers.

For the price of this cable I can nearly buy a new TV.

Any other way of doing this? The monitor only have a VGA port.

I know the feeling!
I have been running the same type of deal from my side

Just check the rate of the monitor can handle the refresh rate and scale of the screen but it should not cost you an arm, leg and new screen.

Volcano has a HDMI to VGA (Blue) cable at Game. Was like R300 bucks. sound might be a prob but for PS4 I was using a headphone and Vita TV was a little set of Bluetooth ears (also Volcano) all in all not too bad

I got that cable, works perfectly, however no sound...the monitor or Xbox don't have a audio jack....

The monitor is a UHD monitor, the monitor should be able to handle the refresh rate.

I starting to wonder if not just going to be easier to go and buy a small TV.

Oh ok! and small Bluetooth speakers?
I don't have an XB so i don't know the comparability with [censored] Speakers...

Might be like some of the older sets where you have to specify like laptop connected with that type of cable not to output audio to HDMI and allow to [censored]?

On your Volcano cabel, is there a Mini-USB and 3.5mm jack on it?
I have connected my earphone to the 3.5mm and sounds coming through with settings set to audio out via HDMI?

The Xbox we have don't have Bluetooth, I looked at the option.

Best I go and look for a cheap TV.
