Playstationer's salt is all it was
I played the other Gears, great games. This just looks so, so.
Having ignored sleep and powered through the campaign - with a bit of split screen coop on the side - it's one of my favourites. Gears 2 still has the best mix of spectacle, level design and interesting encounters, but Gears 4 has a much more focused campaign and story, and I'd rate equal if not better than Gears 1. It starts a little slow but picks up nicely and has an entertaining - if a little stupid - ending sequence.
It takes place over a day, has a good mix of open spaces and tight cramped corridor fights, some slow tension-building exploration , and more thoughtful firefights with ranged opponents rather than an endless rush of melee enemies. The windflare mechanic provides some environmental kill options and makes throwing grenades a very bad idea.
With some coop support, the Hardcore difficulty seemed just right whereas playing solo, Normal was the better option thanks to dodgy AI during the tougher fights. The campaign is probably 8-10 hours depending on difficulty.
